ISRA Thursday Bulletin - April 11, 2019

The Gun Sanctuary County movement which started in Effingham County, Illinois has now spread throughout the country.  In Washington State two more counties have declared themselves Gun Sanctuary Counties.  Here in Illinois, Carroll County has now joined the ranks of the resistance.  More are pending.

In my last Thursday Bulletin, I spoke about our most recent Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD) but failed to mention one quite impressive element.  One of our faithful members, Joyce Lindelof, 91 years young, not only attended IGOLD, but marched to the Capitol along with many of you.  Joyce has been an active ISRA member for many years.  We can all learn a lot from her dedication to our Second Amendment rights.  Thank you Joyce and we hope to see you next year!

IGOLD 2019 is now nestled into the history as one of the best we have ever had.  I want to thank all those who attended, the fabulous volunteers, staff, bus sponsors and organizations who helped make IGOLD 2019 a great event.  Our keynote speaker, David Keene, did a wonderful job and will be a tough act to follow.  This year’s March to the Capitol was a spectacle to behold.  The March was a sea of gold that seemed to flow down Capitol Avenue.  We were aided by beautiful sunny weather and temperature in the 60s.  There is no question that things went well for us this year.

In only six days one of the most important events in the Legislative Session will occur, Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD).  This is the best chance for law-abiding gun owners to show how important our Second Amendment rights are to us.  IGOLD could not come at a more opportune time.  I expect legislation to begin to move in a few weeks.  Now is the time to show legislators how dedicated we are to preserving our Second Amendment rights.

On Sunday, March 10, 2019, a pro-Second Amendment Rally was held in Effingham, Illinois, with 1602 people attending.  I have never seen a rally this large and enthusiastic outside of IGOLD.  It is very important that everyone possible attend IGOLD on Wednesday, March 27th.  The rally in Effingham is indicative of what is going on in Illinois outside of Chicago.  When HR0101 came up, the resolution to separate Chicago from the rest of the State, the cheers were long and loud.  It is not that Downstaters hate the people in Chicago, it is that they hate being ruled by Chicago politicians and their country bumpkin attitude toward the rest of the State.

When any event happens where lives are lost, we all wonder what happened, could this have been prevented, who didn’t do their job, was the system at fault and a variety of immediately unanswerable questions.  Such was the case in the Aurora shooting a few weeks ago.  Answers to these situations are complicated and don’t pop up like your morning toast.

In the heat of all the anti-gun activity in Springfield, it is important to remember the Illinois State Rifle Association is moving forward on the litigation front.  I am pleased to announce the suit against Cook County and their so-called assault weapons ban is again moving forward.  The case known as Wilson v Cook County will be argued before the Seventh Circuit on April 4th, 2019.  For those who might not recall, the Seventh Circuit is a Federal Court with the next stop being the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS).

The work place shooting in Aurora has ignited a firestorm in Springfield.  There are questions about both human and system failures, and also the ever-present question and plea of what can we do, we must do something!  That combination is the recipe for bad law.

Another Illinois gun company has bitten the dust, at least in Illinois.  Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT) is the brainchild of Karl Lewis and was located in Milan, Illinois since 1980.  LMT produces firearms for 45 countries around the world, specializing in high quality firearms for elite units like the British Special Air Services to their latest contract with the Estonian Defense Forces.  Those two contracts alone brought $55,000,000 into Illinois.  Remember they deal with 43 other countries.  I don’t know the value of those contracts but it could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars and beyond.  Also remember that most of this money comes from oversees into Illinois - or did.  No more.  The need for expanded facilities and the relentless bombardment of anti-gun initiatives by the Illinois General Assembly, including burdensome taxes and threats from assorted Illinois Governors, forced LMT to move to the welcoming arms of Eldridge, Iowa. The Illinois General Assembly should get the Economic Development Awards from Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri.

The most difficult year gun owners have ever faced is about to begin in the General Assembly.  I want everyone to understand that the ISRA lobbying team will be doing everything possible to protect your Second Amendment Rights.  I know these are troubling times and gun owners are worried and frustrated.  There are a few who have called legislators names.  That is not helpful.  The ones that I know about were not ISRA members but we are still painted with the same brush.  When that happens and we try to talk to legislators the name calling becomes the topic and we never get to discuss the bill or issue that we were there to talk about.  It simply makes our job more difficult.

We are now seeing bills introduced that I call the gems of January.  These bills clearly indicate where the anti-gun mob would like to go.  As I write this, some bills have only been filed with the Clerk of the House or Senate so they have not gone anywhere yet.  The clerk will send the bills to the House Rule Committee or the Senate Assignments Committee.  A bill’s first stop is in the House Rules Committee or the Senate Assignments Committee.  These Committees will decide which Committee in the respective legislative chambers will hear the first reading of the bills.  It is here that witness slips will be submitted, testimony is heard and Amendments offered.  A bill may be passed out of Committee and sent to whichever chamber or held in committee, or if it fails, that is the end of it.  I might as well tell you that the gun bills will go to mostly anti-gun Committees.  Elections have consequences.

Martin Luther King is a true American hero.  His resolve and conviction transformed our nation for the better.  There are not many people willing to put their own lives at risk for what they believe but that is exactly what Martin Luther King did.
