There was a time when our representatives had a fair respect for the will of the people. No more. Astute observers have noted that progressive politicians are fond of ruling against the will of the people. The Obama administration, for example, was very successful at ramming through programs unpopular with Americans: government-run health insurance, a massive debt-inducing stimulus, a costly energy policy, gender-neutral bathrooms, even a “healthy” school lunch program—and, thankfully, less successful anti-gun initiatives.
Progressives do not like our constitutional system because it was designed to restrain radical ambitions and sweeping change. Candidate Obama’s famous boast that “we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” telegraphed his designs to turn America leftward in a big way. And his “clingers” comments revealed how deeply he despised the character of ordinary Americans.
For all of the Obama-era change, it wasn’t enough for progressives. Americans who hold traditional values stubbornly resist the progressives’ brave new world and this greatly frustrated the Left. In the May Commentary, Noah C. Rothman wrote about the unhappy Left and its problem with America, perfectly illustrated through its relationship with guns:
“Violence, too, is seen as systemic. Acts of small-scale and mass violence are the result of many factors in American life. The individual who commits those heinous acts is often a secondary concern to activists on the Left. For them, the problem rests in our militaristic national character, which is foremost exemplified by a pathological devotion to guns. As a recent headline at the New Republic put it: ‘“America’s Gun Sickness Goes Way Beyond Guns.”’
Even with control over most of our cultural, educational, and legal institutions, the Left will not be contented. They are getting closer to their utopian state, but they can’t stand the thought of living in the utopia with simple, gun-toting rubes—those who love their country in ways they can’t comprehend.
The Left knows that the Second Amendment is the last bulwark of our liberties. Shut down our gun rights and everything else in their plan for America will fall into place. President Trump renewed his pledge to protect our Second Amendment rights and Governor Rauner has been fairly solid in opposing the Democrats’ devious legislative plans. But the president’s future may depend on the midterm results, and Rauner had so offended his conservative base when he adopted progressive and social justice policies that there is little chance he can be reelected. After the fall election, the progressive Democrats in Springfield will very likely have total political power. It may be hard to believe that after winning the concealed carry fight, but those of us living in Illinois are facing the prospect of real damage being done to our Second Amendment rights.
President Reagan, a man who knew as well as anyone that protecting our rights is an ongoing battle against those who would take them away said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
Get ready to fight.
