Gun owners, get active!

Gun owners, get active!

By John Meacham, ISRA Member

As I read an article with the headline “RNC internal poll finds GOP in danger due to complacent Trump voters: report” on thehill.com, I was reminded of what Illinois State Rifle Association leaders told those of us who attended a regional meeting in Marion Tuesday of last week.

We conservatives in general and law-abiding firearm owners in particular are all too often our own worst enemies. We are too often too apathetic or uninformed to bring our full power to bear against our very real foes.

ISRA Thursday Bulletin - September 20, 2018

by Richard Pearson

The media seldom mentions the 2,000,000 or more times a citizen uses a firearm in self-defense.  Many times, these incidents are unreported and if they are reported, they go unmentioned or appear deep in a newspaper.  Sometimes there is just no avoiding reporting a good outcome when a legally armed citizen uses a firearm.  Such was the case last Thursday when Cicero, Illinois police officers engaged a suspect who was firing at them with an automatic weapon.  Officer Luis Duarte was hit several times during the shootout.  Suddenly, an armed citizen got out of his car and fired at the suspect, hitting him once, which ended the gunfight.  The Cicero, Illinois Superintendent of Police and Town President Larry Dominick praised the citizen for intervening.   The name of the armed citizen has not been released.
Cicero is in Cook County.  Cook County has 89,779 Illinois Concealed Carry Licensees and 598,205 FOID card holders, as of last week.

Recent research by John Lott has brought to light interesting facts regarding concealed carry.  Nationally, in 2018, the number of concealed carry permits has grown to 17.25 million.  Last year, the number of permits had grown 890,000, the most in any year.  It is important to understand that 14 states do not require permits and are not counted in any of the above numbers.  It is certainly possible that there are 25 to 30 million people carrying firearms for self-defense.  Alabama has 22.1% of the adults carrying, followed by Indiana with 17.9% and South Dakota with 17.1%.  Four states have over 1,000,000 permits: Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Texas.

ISRA Thursday Bulletin - September 6, 2018

by Richard Pearson

The downhill slide to the Midterm Elections has begun and right on queue the Gifford’s have announced plans for ever-tightening firearm regulations.  The basic theme of all of this is that there are never enough gun control restrictions to satisfy them.  Their goal is the strangulation of the Second Amendment.  This includes the usual stuff like running gun dealers out of business by piling on costs and regulations, running the cost of firearm ownership as high as they can, taxation on firearms and ammunition and the outright banning of firearms.  The new twist seems to be to put a bureaucrat in charge of seeing if you and I are worthy enough to own a firearm.  Remember an attack on one class of firearms is an attack on all classes of firearms.
