The New Year

by Don Bekeleski

We are entering a New Year. There are some things to celebrate in this New Year. We have a pro gun majority in the US congress and a lot of pro gun legislators elected in our Illinois General Assembly. Many, many editorials have given the re-election of George Bush to the credit of America’s gun owners and hunters. I sincerely hope this will cause a lot of the gun owners who have always kept the low profile (scared to be called a gun nut) to now get out of the shadows and get involved totally in defense of the 2nd Amendment. It shows what we as a vocal demanding group can accomplish. You are no longer in the minority but instead we walk loudly and carry a big stick! I sincerely hope this causes more to join the NRA and the ISRA. Get out from under the blanket, hold that head up high, stick that chest out and defend your rights.

I believe with this kind of majority we will finally get the suing of gun manufacturers stopped once and for all. The guy who dressed up like Elmer Fudd and went and shot that goose in October will probably still vote against it, just as when he came off the campaign trail to do so, but it won’t matter this time! Remember guns have only two enemies-rust & liberals.

Something else that very possibly could happen on this next watch is the appointment of Supreme Court judges. This President has said he would only appoint judges that strictly interpret the Constitution. This would be a judge that upholds the 2nd Amendment as an individual right to keep and bear arms. This also would be a great plus for the American people and the Bill of Rights. It’s a time to feel good about these United States.

Another piece of legislation I hope will get passed is a federal law which allows someone that has been cleared to have a concealed carry license in one state will be allowed to carry in all 50 states. There is no reason for a person to be a felon just because he crosses a state line carrying the proper credentials. Again it’s our turn to speak up in favor of such things. Did not the other side speak against such legislation when they had the upper hand? You bet they did.

It would also be nice to see Illinois get concealed carry passed. But I believe it will only happen through an override vote with the current situation in our state. When someone says, “Do you want everyone going around carrying a gun under his or her shirt? That can be very scary.” My response would be “All the bad guys are doing it already, so why would it be scary if the good guys are carrying one?” I think I would feel a lot safer if the good guys are carrying just in case something happened. Also firearms pre-emption would be very nice. It would restore all the rights to individuals living in cities and towns that have lost them through silly legislation!

Another nice gesture would be to call your Representative or Senator (if they are newly elected and are pro gun) and congratulate them on their win. Tell them that you feel very good knowing they will always defend your 2nd Amendment rights, because too many others in the past have tried to take it away Tell them you wish them the very best and will keep them in your prayers.

Also this doesn’t mean that we don’t have to call anymore when a piece of bad legislation shows up on the horizon. What has defeated bad legislation in the past must be continued. When you call now the feeling will be more confident your views are being listened to. No legislator is going to take gun owners lightly anymore after this great showing. What we want them saying is the calls are more than they used to be and we are a much stronger voice. We are always in a battle for that right but now we just had the tanks and artillery arrive, but they will be useless if the enemy doesn’t hear them going off. They will think our side died down. Keep up the calls by all means!

The sunrises look brighter to us, but don’t think the anti’s have given up. What we must do is build on the new strength we have received to become stronger and stronger. The enemy will stand up to strike again but it doesn’t look like Goliath anymore and we should feel more like Rocky Balboa. Our one-two punch can be stronger, but we have to work to get more people in our corner. Use this victory to rally more people and the next time around victory will be ours again. It’s a great time for gun owners. Walk tall-- walk proud!
