From My Cold Dead Hands

by Don Bekeleski

First as promised I would like to post some comments from people who wrote me and joined the NRA or ISRA because of my last article. I personally want to thank them for no longer sitting on the sidelines and instead getting into the game.

Don: Count us in. I am a member of the NRA but I have been on the outside looking in  at the ISRA far too long. I just downloaded an application and it will be coming in the mail within the week (and for my wife and daughter as well).

With HB2414 I knew it was time to be counted as an Illinois citizen who is sick of the dictatorial push to disarm myself and my fellow statesmen and I am especially outraged at Comrade Blagojevich's insistence that I must be a criminal or terrorist to want an "assault weapon". I sincerely hope I'm not the only one to wake up to this urgent need to be heard. Josh - 1 NRA & 1 ISRA Membership

Don: I am already a NRA member and later tonight after we are done working at our VFW fish fry, I will be getting a membership to ISRA. I drive a truck and listen to NRA news every day and it just drives me nuts to hear of the crazy bills introduced in CHICAGO oops I mean SPRINGFIELD. Moving from OK to IL is a hell of a big shock. WOW such gun laws, but you can count on my family and I to help with the fight.

I belonged to so many organizations and figured I have to stop somewhere. But then I decided to stop letting others carry my load and become a member of the ISRA also. I procrastinated too long and I just wanted to say yes, add my number and count me in!

Don: I used to belong to ISRA and let my membership lapse. I tried to join on-line a couple years ago and the system didn't work. Illinois gun owner rights are in pitiful shape and appear to be headed even further down hill. I am rejoining ISRA to lend my support and stay informed of what further unconstitutional nonsense Daley et al are pushing for. Thanks, Keith

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the famous words spoken by Charleton Heston at the NRA convention as he held up a Muzzleloader just presented to him as a gift, while the crowd roared! Some may say it was just an exclamatory phrase spoken by a celebrity. I beg to differ. It was a very deep conviction Mr. Heston held in his heart over his firearm and he was not afraid to say it!

I believe each and every one of us should have the same conviction and have those words as our motto. It is that serious today and anyone who thinks otherwise is living in the dark ages. Imagine if you will that you are an early colonist in this country and there were people talking about removing the 2nd Amendment right just established in the Bill Of Rights. I believe you would use those very words to those antagonists.

The same should hold true today. The anti-gun lot always tries to play on your sympathetic side. They will say things like, "Surely you don’t object to a simple waiting period”? or “Surely you don’t object to banning rapid fire weapons such as semi-autos”? or “Surely you don’t object to locks on your guns so no one gets hurt”?

Your response could be something like this. “Surely you don’t object to waiting four hours to respond to someone who just falsely accused you of something”? or “Surely you don’t object to rapid fire responses to someone telling lies about you”? or “Surely you don’t object to us putting a lock on your mouth so no one gets hurt by your words”? Whether it’s the 1st Amendment or the 2nd, they both are your rights established by the founding fathers in the Bill Of Rights.

Their response to your questions might be, ”Over my dead body”! Then you say, “From my cold dead hands.” They will always try to make you feel guilty about firearm ownership like you are in the minority and you shouldn’t speak out in favor of it. That is BS and you should speak out with both barrels of your mouth in a gentle but definite manner.

Ask them if they can give you an example of where banning of guns has reduced murders. Tell them they have a number of places to choose from like England, Australia, Canada. All these have banned gun ownership and gun crime has doubled. How about Washington, D.C. or Chicago. The reason being criminals don’t obey gun control laws and will always get guns! Tell them if they noticed that since we banned heroin we sure solved the drug problem, didn’t we?

There are millions of people who think just like you and the only reason you hear the other side so often is because of the liberal press in this country, not because they are the majority! Tell them that if they don’t want to own a firearm and prefer to be a victim, that is their choice, but don’t ever talk about taking ‘your choice’ of self-defense away!!

Then they will usually come out with, you don’t need such and such a weapon for hunting. Tell them it doesn’t say,” In order to duck hunt, the right of the people shall not be infringed.” The 2ndAmendment is not about hunting! It’s about the right to “keep and bear”.

When someone approaches you to talk about the dangers of guns just say in your mind immediately and quietly to yourself, “From my cold dead hands”, and you will come out on top. Apply common sense to everything they say and you can’t lose. Tell them of the great drop in crime rate in every concealed carry state. They can’t back up any of their rhetoric with facts of any kind. They can’t stand facts of how gun control has failed and gun ownership has reduced crime. It may only be small talk, but you will turn it into powerful talk very shortly!
