Deer Check Stations

by Don Bekeleski

I received my deer permit in the mail recently. If you got one you also have noticed that they have eliminated the “check stations” where you used to take your deer the day you bagged it. They are keeping some northern counties open where CWD could be a possibility. Although CWD can pop up anywhere just as it first did in this state. I seriously believe they should mandate x amount of animals in each county still be required for a sample. This would only take 2 people per county. Otherwise it will be chow down guys and hope for the best, cause you’ll never know if it has spread.

Now I can understand maybe they are trying to save some money, but it sure is a pain when you are hunting deer and after you get one you now have to spend valuable hunt time measuring and collecting all the info they want. This would be okay if you could do it after the day’s hunt. That though, is pretty impossible, cause all the questions and the ruler you need is on the back of the tag. This means you can’t even tag the animal till you spend this 15 minutes gathering information on the back of the tag. This will really irk you if you are playing DNR secretary and a nice big buck runs past you while you have a pen in your hand instead of a gun! I often wonder while I’m gutting my first deer if that bonus anterless one is going to trot by. Now I have paperwork to do too. It also was nice to know how old your deer was, which you also found out at the check station.

It does have one advantage, like not having to do the extra traveling in snowy weather or same deal for people hunting a long distance from the check station.

Another thing you may have fun with. Try to put the ‘confirmation number’ on the tag when it’s full of blood or it’s wet from rain. Is law enforcement going to allow some room if it’s wet and just impossible to write that number on the tag, as long as we have the number?? Just a few things to think about and enjoy when you head to the woods this fall. I’d say if you write with your right hand you better learn to shoot with your left hand just in case, or you may be using those words that made your mother wash your mouth out with soap. Make sure your pen writes or it will be a hike back to the car before you tag it.

One small step for the DNR. One giant pain for the hunter!
