CWD Testing

by Don Bekeleski

I hunt deer in JoDaviss County. With the elimination of check stations in my county my first concern was the stopping of sampling for CWD. Thus, my previous article was written of how we sportsmen should demand that the sampling continue.

This morning I made a call to the division of wildlife, hoping to get a person and number deer hunters could call with their concerns. Instead I received some good news from the DNR biologist. They have not stopped the testing. Counties where heavy concentration of CWD has been found will still have check stations where they will have to report with deer for sampling. Also some of the bordering counties will have to check in.

Then he told me they are going to check different counties on a rotating basis every year. He also informed me that they found less cases of the disease last year then the previous year, which is some hope. Numerous sampling from these counties will be taken; thus assuring us they haven’t stopped nor given up on the tracking. I would like to say right here “thank you” DNR .

Illinois sportsmen bag an average of 100,000 deer every year in this state during the gun season. As I have said before we have an excellent deer herd. I am very glad our DNR is striving to keep it that way. All the deer hunters can now take a deep breath and relax. They are on the job.

My concerns and the concerns of gun owners and hunters are expressed in my articles. However I am not that big that I cannot say at times I may jump the gun. In this subject I should have researched before writing. This is the reason for putting this correction on as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding!
