Christmas Season
by
Don Bekeleski
This is the greatest holiday season of
them all. It’s a time when family feels really close together and the spirits of
most people are at a high point of the year. Everyone seems to be thinking of
what they will buy their favorite friend, and what would the kids really like
that would make it a very memorable Christmas. As an adult looking back on all
those years, I can think of one gift I always wanted to receive from my parents
but never got it. That gift was a gun of my very own. Even today as an adult I
wish once my wife and family would have purchased some gun I really wanted to
own. If your son or daughter is at the age where they enjoy shooting, believe me
if you want to see them go wild with excitement on Christmas day, buy them that
gun.
They will never stop talking about it, nor as long as they live will they ever
forget what you bought for them –guaranteed!! One thing you want to do is
disguise the box by adding to the size or whatever so they will not have an
inkling of what might be in it. Put yourself in their shoes as if you were that
age opening that box and you will know exactly the thrill it will create.
When I was sixteen I asked my father if I could buy a bolt action Mossberg 16 ga.
shotgun a friend of my brother’s was selling. He said no! My brother butted in
and said “Dad, he wants to buy a gun for $15. He is not spending the money on
booze or cigarettes, just something he really enjoys “. My father said go ahead
and buy the gun. I was tickled pink, but now I really wish my dad had said let
me think about it and bought the gun secretly and presented it to me as a
present. Then I would have really been ecstatic!
Talk it over as parents who really love and want to just thrill their child down
to their toes this Christmas. It will also give you a chance to tell his teacher
what a wholesome sport shooting is, because you know he is going to tell
everyone about his present. Children that grow up enjoying the outdoors be it
shooting or fishing, most of the time will stay away from the drug scene, the
gang scene and just trouble in general. Their big interest will lie in the
outdoors. If any of you do this I would love to hear about it. Please write me
at the address below and let me know if this wasn’t the best Christmas yet. They
will relive that moment over and over again their whole life!
