Disaster brings out the best and worst people, politicians and governments. As
disastrous as Hurricane Katrina is we can be grateful for the lessons she
reminded us of and the new ones she taught us.
Let’s review what she reminded us of. The government cannot take care of you.
When Katrina hit, New Orleans turned into chaos. Over 400 police officers quit,
leaving citizens at the mercy of murderers, rapists and looters. The citizens
who were armed suffered the least. Actually it was the looters, murderers and
rapists who suffered (good).
There were stories out there about armed citizens protecting themselves, but
they didn’t seem to make network television, at least not that I saw. Those
stories did make local newspapers. The headlines tell the story. Here are a
couple of examples: “Armed Militia Protects New Orleans Neighborhood” and my
favorite, “With Guns and Generators, A Few Homeowners Stand Guard Over
Neighborhoods”. There you have it; the Second Amendment at work just like our
forefathers envisioned it. The government can’t and won’t protect you. That job
is reserved for each one of us.
Despite armed citizens everywhere in New Orleans protecting themselves, I heard
no reports of accidental shootings or any missteps by law-abiding citizens. Why
then did we suddenly hear about guns being confiscated from law-abiding
citizens? The mayor ordered the police to confiscate guns of law-abiding
citizens. Now if the police had enough time to go around confiscating guns, why
didn’t they have enough time to stop looters? In fact, by disarming law-abiding
citizens they made it easier for looters.
All citizens must be very wary of all the authority given to government during a
“State of Emergency”. During these times we all get to see the dark side of
government. New Orleans is just the latest example.
Things are so outrageous in New Orleans that the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF)
and the National Rifle Association (NRA) have partnered in preparing a lawsuit
against the City of New Orleans, the State of Louisiana and the Federal
Government.
One final note; as law-abiding citizens tried to purchase firearms and
ammunition to protect themselves, their families and neighbors, Wal-Mart stopped
selling those items in 40 stores along the gulf coast. Remember that, next time
you buy a gun or accessories. You better support your local gun store because
Wal-Mart will leave you high and dry.
