ISRA Thursday Bulletin - February 23, 2017

by Richard Pearson

As expected, last week, gun bills in the House Judiciary Committee were sent to the Firearms Subcommittee.  Subcommittees are a way to "park bills” so a full committee does not have to deal with them right away.   A subcommittee is often a place where bills go to die, but not always.  We have seen anti-gun bills pop out of subcommittee very quickly and go to the full committee, then go to the floor on Second Reading, in under two hours.  We cannot let our guard down.  It is a lot tougher to get pro-gun bills out of the House Judiciary Subcommittee and the whole House Judiciary Committee because gun owners don't have many friends on that committee.  It is Springfield and anything can happen.  We will be there.

The news media is always blasting President Trump and, thankfully, he is blasting back.  Last Saturday there was an Associated Press article by Summer Ballantine, which explains why the "lame stream" press is not trusted.  It isn’t that they always lie; it's just that they don't tell the truth.  The article was talking about Concealed Carry in Missouri and appeared in Missouri newspapers.  The headline was "Concealed Carry Interest Drops".   The story noted that the number of Missouri permit applications fell by almost half from 2015 to 2016, and  talks about the Missouri Legislature overriding the Governor's veto to allow people to carry "hidden weapons" without a permit.   In short, Missouri passed Constitutional Carry.  The number of permits dropping does not lead to the conclusion that Concealed Carry interest is wavering.  In fact, the exact opposite is true and that idea is never expressed.

I am not opposed to Constitutional Carry, but I am a big believer in focused education and training.  Every person who carries a firearm should have an understanding of the law, demonstrate proficiency with firearms, have an understanding of the situations that can occur, and options they have.   A life or death situation is no time for "on the job training.”

Last Friday, a young woman and her fiancé were sitting on their front porch of their Bloomington, Illinois home waiting for a food delivery.  Two young men walked into their yard and started calling the female names.  She walked out into her yard and told these two guys to get out of her yard.  They grabbed and threw her on the ground, kicking and beating her.  Her fiancé came to her aid and he too was beaten.  They both went to the hospital.  The police came and thought this couple provoked the two men.  The police did nothing.

There are a couple of points to be made here.  These two people thought they lived in a safe neighborhood.  While some may be safer than others, there are no completely safe neighborhoods.  The second thing is what I mentioned before.  On the job training is not a good idea.  It could have been much worse.  I understand these two people are headed for a Concealed Carry class.  Training can't always save you, but it sure will increase your odds.

John Farnham, DTI Inc, will present a class at our ISRA Range on March 31st, April 1st and 2nd.  March 31st will be an evening lecture.   If you are looking for top-notch training, John Farnham's class is for you.  You can register online for this class at defense-training.com
