In 2000, the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) decided to have a one day Open House to invite new shooters to the ISRA Range. We thought this would be a great way to introduce inexperienced people to the shooting sports. In 2008, we partnered with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the number of participating firearm and ammunition manufacturers grew. We hosted 2453 people in 2012. This one day event became known as NRA Day at the ISRA Range.
NRA Day at the ISRA Range has two main goals. First is to teach a short course in firearm safety to all those who attend. This class must be completed before anyone touches a firearm. We believe this event is the largest one day firearm safety course in the United States. About 18,000 people have attended this event throughout the past years. The second goal is to introduce people to the shooting sports.
After attending the safety class people may go to the various ranges to shoot, and select from .22 rifle, .22 handgun, center fire handgun, center fire rifle, black powder, shotgun, or archery. Each person is accompanied by a coach from the time they select a firearm, through firing the firearm and returning the firearm to the table from which it was selected. Ammunition is loaded for that firearm with the aid of the coach to be sure the firearm and ammunition match up. NRA Day at the ISRA Range welcomes manufacturers who display their firearms and may allow attendees to shoot them, all under the watchful eye of a shooting coach.
One of the attractions is the antique military vehicle display as well as re-enactors, who set up camps from the French and Indian War to the Vietnam War field hospitals.
NRA Day at the ISRA Range is really a great event. We hope more people attend on June 17, 2017.
All law-abiding citizens are invited...even those who do not own a gun or have never fired a gun before.
Factory representatives from major manufacturers will be on hand to answer your questions about your favorite firearms. You can test-fire the guns of your choice and try your hand at archery as well. A small fee is charged for ammunition.
A BB gun and an air rifle range will be set up for our younger guests-a great opportunity to get the whole family involved, RAIN or SHINE! Food and soft drink vendors will be on site to make sure you don't go hungry or thirsty.
We will also have information available on a wide variety of ISRA and NRA programs. We encourage you to stop by and pick up a pamphlet on your particular area of interest.
